    Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common and potentially lethal heart disease in cats. To reduce its prevalence, breeding cats are frequently screened on the basis of their phenotype or genotype. Although echocardiography is the most reliable phenotypical method, its efficacy is limited by the incomplete penetrance of HCM and by difficulties in distinguishing primary HCM from other causes of left ventricular hypertrophy. On the other hand, genetic testing is hampered by the genetic heterogeneity of the disease. Genetic tests are currently only available for Maine Coons and Ragdolls. Because of the high prevalence of HCM, stringent selection may have a negative impact on the genetic diversity of a breed. A more optimal selection would therefore be a slow and careful exclusion of phenotypically and/or genetically positive cats

    Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common diagnosed congenital disease in dogs that usually causes heart failure and death unless corrected at a young age. A 2.5-year-old female intact Coton de Tuléar was referred and diagnosed with a left to right shunt PDA. Closure of the PDA was performed via a minimally invasive approach by means of an Amplatz canine duct occluder device. In this case report, we describe a successful anaesthetic protocol that included premedication using a combination of acepromazine and methadone, induction with propofol and midazolam and maintenance with isoflurane in oxygen, as well as a lidocaine constant rate constant rate infusion for intraoperative analgesic and cardiovascular support. This protocol provided excellent intraoperative cardiopulmonary stability and a smooth and rapid recovery

    Urinary markers for renal dysfunction are gaining interest but effects of sampling method, storage conditions, and urinary tract inflammation or infection on these markers are unclear Therefore, the objectives of the current study were to determine the difference in urinary albumin (uALB), urinary retinol-binding protein (uRBP), and urinary N-acetyl-beta D-glucosaminidase (uNAG) concentrations in cystocentesis and voided samples and to investigate concentration changes after storage at -20 degrees C and at -80 degrees C Effects of a protease inhibitor were also assessed in samples stored at -80 degrees C for 12 months In a pilot experiment, influence of in vitro hematuria, pyuria, and bacteriuria on the urinary markers was evaluated A mixed model was used to calculate mean differences and 95% confidence intervals Urinary ALB, uNAG, and uRBP concentrations were similar in voided and cystocentesis samples After storage for 4 months at -20 degrees C, uALB concentration was not affected and uRBP concentration showed a mild and clinically irrelevant decrease, whereas uNAG activity was significantly lower compared with fresh samples After storage for 12 months at -80 degrees C, uALB and uRBP concentrations did not differ from fresh samples but uNAG activity was severely decreased Protease inhibitor addition did not preserve uNAG activity Experimental hematuria, pyuria, and bacteriuria did not seem to affect urinary markers although further research is neede

    Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine disorders in the dog. Although diagnostics are relatively straightforward, treatment and especially adequate long-term monitoring are challenging. To avoid complications, such as hypoglycemia, weight loss, diabetes ketoacidosis and urinary tract infections, adequate monitoring is indispensable. In this review different monitoring tools, such as history and clinical signs, single and serial blood glucose measurements, glycated blood products, continuous glucose measurements and urine glucose will be evaluated. Because each monitoring technique has its limitations, the challenge for the veterinarian is to use an adequate combination of these tools to obtain a good image of the patient's glycemic status

    Combined atypical primary hypoadrenocorticism and primary hypothyroidism in a dog

    A dog with combined atypical primary hypoadrenocorticism and primary hypothyroidism is described. The dog presented with waxing and waning, vague complaints since more than a year and had been treated with several drugs without complete resolution of signs. Based on the abnormalities on physical examination, blood examination and abdominal ultrasonography, atypical primary hypoadrenocorticism and primary hypothyroidism were diagnosed. Glucocorticoid supplementation was started and gradually tapered to maintenance rate because of polydipsia. Ten days later, levothyroxine supplementation was started at a very low dose and was gradually increased based on serum total thyroxine concentrations. The dog rapidly improved and recovered completely. Follow-up over a one-year period did not reveal new abnormalities. The presence of combined primary hypoadrenocorticism and primary hypothyroidism has been infrequently described in dogs and may resemble the Schmidt's syndrome in humans

    Tricuspid valve dysplasia in dogs

    A general overview of tricuspid valve dysplasia in dogs is presented in this review. This congenital disease has been described in numerous large dog breeds but especially the Labrador retriever is predisposed. The condition is relatively uncommon, with a prevalence of approximately seven percent of all congenital heart diseases in dogs. The asymptomatic phase may last for several years and depends on the severity of the valve malformation. In the clinical phase, exercise intolerance, fatigue, anorexia, cardiac cachexia, dyspnea and signs of right-sided congestive heart failure can be present. Echocardiography including Doppler imaging is warranted to confirm the diagnosis. Curative treatment involves surgical valve replacement but is technically challenging and still in its experimental phase in dogs. As such, treatment in dogs involves the administration of supportive medication once the dogs develop symptoms of congestive heart failure and consists of diuretics, ace-inhibitors and positive inotropic drugs

    Feline arterial thromboembolism : prognostic factors and treatment

    Feline arterial thromboembolism (ATE) is a complete or partial obstruction of a peripheral artery caused by a thrombus that was formed at a distant site. The most common underlying cause in cats is cardiomyopathy. Given the clinical presentation, often without preceding signs, an ATE event is considered one of the most distressing emergency conditions in feline practice. Often, these cats are euthanized at the time of diagnosis. However, recent scientific research has shown that a subpopulation of these patients may have long-term survival. In case of adequate treatment and follow-up, some cats survive over a year with a satisfying quality of life. Key points of ATE are the identification of specific prognostic factors in the individual patient in order to guide owner communication, the decision to treat or not to treat, individually adjusted patient management and regular monitoring, which are discussed in this article
